The Maracanã cried for Messi

The historical Maracanã, officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built before 1950 to be as the flagship venue for the World Cup of 1950. It was called the biggest football stadium in the world that time. Construction of this stadium began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later i 1950 before the world cup. Maracanã then started on 16 June 1950 with a friendly game between a selection of players from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo..

Eight days later, Maracanã became historical to host the opening match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Mexico. That match Brazil won by 4-0.  This stadium ended the 1950 world cup run with the defeat of Brazil against Uruguay in the Final.

The official attendance of the final match was about 173,000 paying spectators, but it is estimated that more than 200,000 witnessed the game live from the stands. The historical venue of Brazil was officially renamed in 1966 following the death of Brazilian journalist Mário Filho, but most people have kept referring to the stadium as Maracanã.

In 1990 , a deadly accident turned the stadium covered with seats later. Brazil hosted world cup again 2014. The Maracana hosted the historical final between Argentina and Germany. The Maracana cried again as the supporters was expecting the  biggest trophy lifted on Messi’s hand.

So  the people there always tell The Maracana always cries. The historical venue saw the defeat of Brazil in 1950 in the great final. It saw again their neighbor’s defeat in 2014. Though  the clash of Argentina and Brazil is all over all football clashes . But in 2014 , Brazil fans also wanted Argentina to win the world cup.

The reason was not so for Argentina but much more for Lionel Messi. They believe Messi as the best player of football history after Pele. The world cup of 2014 showed the respect for Messi from the Brazilian fans.

In the Final Argentina had to sacrifice their 3rd world cup dream at 113 minutes of the match by the goal Mario Gotza of Germany. Germany lead and won the match by that great one touch goal.
